Salford City’s Green Light to Grow

Salford City FC has been granted planning permission to develop its Moor Lane ground.

The decision is a big boost for the Evostick North club, which has ambitious plans to rise through the divisions and establish itself as a club worthy of a city the size of Salford.  The £500,000 building was initially designed by students at Salford University and completed by AFL Architects.

The “Ammies” original clubhouse was destroyed in an arson attack in December 2009 and the club is using this as an opportunity to change the way it links into the local community with the help of The Sport Business, a social enterprise which specialises in this area.  The new facility will be open seven days a week with a meeting and function room catering for local businesses, schools and community groups.

In another positive move for the area, the club and Salford City College are joining forces to give talented young footballers a chance to break into the professional game.  The partnership will develop a clear pathway for players at the college and will allow the club to enter the FA Youth Cup from 2011/12.  The college will also use Moor Lane for these fixtures.

Phil Arbelo-Dolan, Sports Development Manager at Salford City College, said: “It’s fantastic to be able to establish a partnership with the leading football club in the area.

“It’s also a tremendous opportunity for our footballers, to play in such a prestigious competition as the FA Youth Cup. Our best players will shine at a higher level and can use this to take their first steps into the semi-professional game.”

Salford City FC is also set to establish associated junior teams from next season as part of a wider strategy to integrate the club into the community and to increase the positive influence of the club on young people.

According to club Chairman Darren Quick, the link with Salford City College is a significant step as the football club continues to grow as a community hub.

“We believe we’re moving in the right direction and want as many Salford people as possible getting behind the club.

“The tie-up with the college strengthens our links with young people in the area and we are sure to get a few decent players heading our way.”
