Salford City marked their 250th EFL match with a 1-1 draw against Newport County on Tuesday night.

A penalty apiece scored by Shane McLoughlin and Hakeeb Adelakun respectively settled the game in what was a positive display by the Ammies, despite Tyrese Fornah being sent off late in the game.

Curtis Tilt brought down David Ajiboye in the box in the 10th minute to give the visitors a penalty against the run of play, and former Salford man McLoughlin put the Exiles in front with a cool penalty down the middle.

The Ammies almost got themselves an equaliser a few minutes later after Kylian Kouassi surged towards the box from the right, but his effort was put wide for a corner by Nick Townsend.

After 30 minutes Salford were awarded their first penalty in the league in over a year when Liam Shephard was clipped by Keiron Evans. Adelakun stepped up and slotted it down the right to make it 1-1.

With 15 minutes to go, Salford were controversially reduced to 10 men when Fornah was shown a second yellow after a collision with Newport captain, James Clarke.

Despite going a man down, Salford looked the most likely to score the winner. The best chance fell to substitute Ryan Watson just inside the box but his volley was blocked, while Shephard blazed over from the right in a good position.

While The Ammies fell just short of picking up all three points, Karl Robinson was proud of his players and how they reacted to going a man down.

“Some of our play in recent weeks has been very good, and I can’t ask any more from my players.

"I don’t know how you can pick a man of the match. I thought everyone was excellent, so from my point of view we will try to carry on that form with the league leaders on the weekend.

"It is a long season. There was always going to be another wobble along the way, but we have got to find a way to go back and find our form again as there is nothing this team can’t do. What I can’t question is that some of our play has been very good and our attitude has been excellent.”
