The midfielder had been with Huddersfield Town since the age of seven, progressing through their academy ranks before gaining senior experience on loan at League Two side Harrogate Town. He also featured in League One, making 14 appearances for Morecambe during the 2022–23 season.

Before signing for the Ammies ahead of the 2024–25 campaign, Austerfield was part of the Crewe Alexandra side that reached the 2024 League Two play-off final at Wembley, where they faced Crawley Town.

In his first season at Salford City, Austerfield demonstrated his versatility by playing in both midfield and defence, making 25 appearances for the club.
