As a 17-year-old Young signed professional terms with Sunderland in November '23, having been part of the club’s Academy since the age of seven, and having represented England at Under-18 and Under-19 levels.   

Young spent the second half of the 2023-24 season on loan at National League North side Darlington, where he made 14 appearances, keeping five clean sheets and helping secure the club’s status in the division.

He then would join Salford initially on a season long loan for the 2024-25 season, with Young making his league debut for the Ammies against Harrogate Town in a 2-0 victory, the first of eight clean sheets he managed to keep in twenty league starts for the club.

In July 2025, Salford announced that the Sunderland goalkeeper would be returning to The Peninsula Stadium for a second season-long loan.
